Dev-Blog #2 Game Goals & Rescue
*DISCLAIMER: DoS2 is still in early development. Images and graphics shown might change or may not appear in the final version of the game.*
Hunt. Gather. Survive. Welcome back, everyone, to the Dev-Blog! Just like in DoS1, you’ll have to survive off the land by gathering resources wherever you can find them. However, resource gathering isn’t just for the sake of living comfortably in the post-apocalypse. There is a light at the end of the tunnel… an end to this misery… there’s an evacuation helicopter waiting for your call!
In DoS1, your goal was simply to keep on surviving in an endless world of chaos and death. DoS1 was a game about longevity and willpower. For DoS2 we wanted to give you a specific end-goal. We wanted you to feel like there was a purpose to this game and that there was something to strive towards.
With that in mind, we thought it made sense if there was an escape helicopter. After gathering resources, unlocking various skills, and fending off hordes of zombies, you’ll eventually reach a level to call an escape helicopter. Of course, things don’t just simply end there. The zombies will obviously notice your attempted escape, and will come running for the fresh meat! You’ll have to hold off the oncoming hordes as the helicopter refuels and prepares for takeoff. Time is of the essence, but you have to be sure your helicopter is capable of taking off. Protect the evac helicopter at all costs or no one leaves!
Overall, we are very excited for this new feature. Having a specific goal will give you a sense of purpose during play, as well as an intense sense of time. You’re constantly on the clock and you'll need to keep a close eye on your resources. Without strategic planning, you’re doomed!
Key Points:
Implemented an escape helicopter feature.
Added NPC and End-game missions rather than just resource gathering.
Implemented repeated hordes, which intensify when the helicopter arrives.
